It`sa tall order, especially when you up the ante and say those houses have to be attractive. Well, college students will compete to build them this fall. Tonight, we continue our series, “Planet Forward,” it`sa partnership with The George Washington University Social Media Project, using your ideas to power our future. SESNO: But every two years, teams with different sorts of decathletes from all around the world gather in Washington, DC Meet the team from Middlebury College in Vermont. They`ve been submitting videos to “Planet Forward” in the run-up to the Solar Decathlon this September. Chevron Tests Solar Technologies
The aim of Project Brightfield, in Bakersfield, Calif., is to find out how well next-generation solar technologies perform over three years. Chevron installed a field of solar panels on a site that was once a refinery. The project will test the effectiveness and durability of solar technologies side-by-side over time. But the project has other benefits because we’re reusing a former industrial site, and we’re producing usable power from the sun’s rays.

SOLAR ACTIVITY UPDATE: Trio of C-Class Flares/Approaching AR (Feb 12th, 2012).
Analysis of Solar Active Regions and Activity from 10/2100Z to 11/2100Z: Solar activity was low due to a trio of C7 x-ray events. Regions 1416 (S19W02) and 1417 (N16E44) each produced C7 events at 10/2352Z and 11/1854Z respectively. The third C7 event was observed at 11/1004Z from behind the east limb near N25. The activity behind the NE limb portends the return of old Region 1402 (N26, L=218). Region 1416 continued its growth phase, both in area and spot count, and maintained a beta-gamma magnetic configuration. At about 10/1900Z, a 27 degree long segmented filament erupted in the NE quadrant of the disk. The ENE to WSW oriented filament was centered at N29E14. An associated CME was observed lifting of the NE limb, first visible in SOHO LASCO C2 imagery at 10/2012Z. www.linktospace.com

Joe Carruth built this by himself and this is the third prototype of his design. The unit weighs 1.5 tons and is 12.5 ft x 14.5 ft of active collection area. He currently manually tracks the sun for testing and hopes to get some funding to bring this project to a self contained version that can be available for Alternative Power production.
